On January 15th 2009, the coldest day the city had seen in nearly a decade, dozens of Chicagoans donned their boots and parkas and made their way to the STOP SMILING
storefront to celebrate the launch of
Experimental Geography: Radical Approaches to Landscape, Cartography and Urbanism, a lavishly illustrated book edited by Nato Thompson and Independent Curators International. The book features contributions from Chicago-based artists and organizers including Ellen Rothenberg, Deborah Stratman, Daniel Tucker and
AREA Chicago. Many of the attendants came directly from a related art exhibition, “Notes for a People’s Atlas of Chicago,” which was curated and hosted by AREA Chicago, a publication dedicated to supporting art, research, education and activism.
Thanks to
Melville House, publishers of
Experimental Geography and co-hosts of the event, AREA Chicago, Tom Masterson for providing the tunes, and the weatherproof souls who were brave enough to attend.
