Say Hello to My Little Spin

Director Brian De Palma (Phantom of the Paradise, Scarface, The Untouchables) is no stranger to criticism. As recently as last winter he took his lumps for the adaptation of James Ellroy‘s The Black Dahlia. But with his latest film, Redacted, which recounts the story of American soldiers murdering an Iraqi family, he’s entering a new stratosphere of controversy. His main opponent: Bill O’Reilly. (Read more about the duel with De Palma here.) In a column titled “Can Movies Kill?,” O’Reilly wonders if De Palma’s anti-war film will incite young Muslim men to act on their hatred of the West. “If just one of those men straps on a bomb vest and murders people, that is on Brian De Palma,” writes O’Reilly. So much for a thumbs-down. In a subsequent column, O’Reilly called for another in a long line of his Montgomery moments: “Americans should stand in front of any theater showing Redacted and hold a simple sign: ‘Support the Troops.'” (Because the film was funded by billionaire Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, the same marching orders apply to NBA fans attending Mavs games.) With temperatures dropping, O’Reilly has just the thing to keep you burning inside: Protesters outside the box-office can suit up with the Spin Stops Here Unisex Fleece ($39.95).
