DAN WINTERS: PERIODICAL PHOTOGRAPHS

Dan Winters, an editor-at-large and frequent contributor to STOP SMILING — see his interviews and portraits of such provacative figures as William Eggleston, William Christenberry (read it here) and Harry Dean Stanton (read it here), as well as his cover story portfolio of images for 2007's Photography Issue — is celebrated by Lynn Hirschberg of the New York Times as "one of the most important chroniclers of America in the last two decades." Hirschberg, who contributed the introductory essay to Winters' first book of assignment work (published last month by Aperture), concludes her essay by stating, "The power of these photos is their ability to trigger emotion, identification and, finally, a sort of collective memory." Here we present a sample of work from Periodical Photographs.
