Impressions from Afghanistan:
Interaction, Reflection
Captain Brian Calvasina served in Afghanistan, providing humanitarian assistance as a member of a provincial reconstruction team. His images of Fort Bragg, North Carolina appeared in both Issue 29: Photography and Issue 31: Ode to the South. His comments follow:
For centuries, conflict dominated Afghanistan society. Rusting hulks of abandoned Russian military machinery and millions of landmines still litter the countryside, providing a constant reminder of years of strife. Despite disparities in technology, culture and industry between Afghanistan and Coalition members, an old-fashioned acumen remains in effect: relationship building through face-to-face interaction.
