The 2009 AWP Conference brought the publishing industry to Chicago during the second week of February, and STOP SMILING celebrated the event with gusto. On February 13th, over 100 people attended a party at the STOP SMILING storefront at which poets August Kleinzahler, Rikki Ducornet, Robyn Schiff, Tod Marshall and Ish Klein read from a selection of their work. Klein showed some of her videos as well, including The Mentalist’s Mental Cabinet of Vengeance, for which the party was named, and although the event was scheduled to end at 10 p.m., guests stuck around to chat and drink while DJ Ben Fasman spun funky soul grooves well into the after hours.
