On Thursday April 24th, artists from around the globe gathered for cocktails and a night of dancing after the opening preview night of NEXT, the invitational exhibition of emerging art. Shifting smoothly to Sonotheque, a nightclub in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village, hundreds of vendors shimmied and shook to the sounds of soul classics and obscure funk records in the lush and dimly lit club. For over eight years, the Sheer Magic DJs have been hosting this monthly soul / funk party at another great Chicago bar, Danny’s, which attracts some of the world’s most respected record collectors as both spectators and guest DJs. (The party was named the best in Chicago by Rolling Stone a few years back.)
At the end of the night – after Moby had popped in to check out the fun – we had to practically drag people off the dance floor and into cabs to prepare for the official public opening of the fair the next day.
